Making memories with your family doesn’t have to cost a fortune, but it can quickly add up if you’re not careful.
Here’s a few ways that you can make it a fun-filled summer without the hefty price tag.
Stick Close to Home
I’ve never been a fan of camping, but my husband loves it. So last year I decided to surprise him and booked us a family weekend of camping. We stuck close to home at a local campground and the price tag was actually quite reasonable.
I find that when it comes to camping – all it takes to avoid spending a fortune on gear is a little planning. When you have the time to make a list of all of the things that you need – you might be surprised at just how many items you already have that are perfect for the occasion.
And if heading off to a campsite isn’t your thing, then why not set up the tent right in your own backyard? A night under the stars is an adventure no matter what your surroundings. And as long as it doesn’t break any laws – backyard campfires (and s’mores) are just as good as those at a campground.
Be sure to check your community listings for ‘movies in the park’ where they feature older films for free. It can be a great way to spend the evening and enjoy some entertainment.
And there’s not as many of them around these days, but if you can find one, why not get 2 for the price of 1 and make it a fun-filled night at the nearest drive in movie theatre?
Be sure to check your community calendar for all of the local events. They’re usually free with the exception of any items you buy while attending and there might even be an opportunity to sign up for classes to learn a new skill like cooking or art.
Pack up a picnic and some water toys and make a day trip to the lake. Just don’t forget that sunscreen or you’ll be paying the price for it later.
If You Do Venture Out
If you do get a chance to travel further, there are ways to stay within budget when it comes to where you stay:
Renting a home through a reliable homeshare site will save you some cash vs staying in a hotel. But if you prefer the comfort of hotel-living – be sure to check for coupons or plan for a weeknight visit vs a weekend to find some savings.
And remember, whatever you decide to do just get started sooner rather than later. Staycationing can be easy and fun for the whole family!
